VALUES WE WISH TO PRESERVE

Ask any resident what they value about Orcas Island and after the obvious description of the natural beauty and tranquility of the island, the answers are more complex and varied. The purpose of this segment of our website is intended to be a forum on what we value. What does the local economy have to do with our values? Realistically, as much as we might wish otherwise, we know that Orcas Island will change. To do nothing is to accept whatever change happens even if it destroys what we value. To us, that is unacceptable and we are motivated to act to influence change by focusing on the local economy. In this, we fully understand the risk of bringing about change that will inadvertently damage those things that we value. To this end, we need to constantly remind ourselves of our values. This is not easy and we ask help from our fellow residents.

We are collecting and will post short vignettes describing situations or experiences that illustrate what is so special about this place. You may participate by writing, in approximately 1000 words or less, about things that make you grateful that you live here. Please do not mention specific individuals by name, especially without their permission. We reserve the right to select the submissions that we will include on this web site.

To participate, please send us an email message with your vignette attached. We can read most standard formats. Send your submission to: losleben@rockisland.com.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
